Texas law separates roofing work from public adjusting. Hire a contractor for the roof—and keep claim decisions with you and your insurer.
After hail, wind, or a fallen limb, door-knockers often blur two jobs: repairing the roof and “handling” the insurance claim. The Texas Department of Insurance’s page on roofing and insurance: know the law is clear: Texas does not allow a roofer or contractor to act as a public insurance adjuster on a claim if they are also doing the work—and they cannot advertise that they will.
TDI lists problem language to watch for: offering to negotiate claim settlements or file a claim for you; promising to recover “every dime” from the insurer; advertising help avoiding “incorrect settlement pricing”; or telling the carrier they represent you on coverage issues.
TDI’s companion tips on signs of a contracting scam still apply in East Texas: do not sign a blank contract; be wary of large up-front payments; get bids in writing with a real local name, phone, and address; verify insurance and bond; and pay by check or card so there is a record. Deductible-waiver pitches are illegal in Texas—walk away from that offer and hire someone else.
None of that replaces reading your policy. It does keep the contractor in the contractor lane.
Photograph openings and missing shingles when it is safe. Cover soft spots to limit further loss and keep receipts. Call your insurer on your timeline. Get more than one written roofing bid based on what is actually on the house—not a full-tear sales script.
Through East Texas Roof Quotes you can request a free roof quote from a local roofer, who will look at what is actually on the roof. East Texas Roof Quotes doesn’t handle insurance claims. A roofer can’t act as your public adjuster.
Takeaway: In Texas, the person swinging the hammer should not also be negotiating your claim. Keep those roles separate, document the damage, and get a local inspection before you sign.
