TDI says most homeowners insurers filing since July 1 proposed decreases, averaging 4.3%. What it means for your renewal and your roof.
For many Texans, yes. The Texas Department of Insurance says most homeowners insurers that filed rate changes since July 1 proposed decreases, affecting about 700,000 policyholders, and filed homeowners rate changes over the past 90 days averaged a 4.3% decrease (TDI, Oct. 8, 2026). A filed decrease isn't a promise that your premium will drop, so you still need to check your own renewal.
You might expect home insurance in Texas to only go one direction. TDI's Oct. 8 release shows a different trend in recent filings:
Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford urged Texans to "shop around" as rates moderate. TDI says nearly 160 companies sell home and auto insurance in Texas, and you can search rate filings online.
Your premium depends on your company, your policy and your home, and the roof is part of that. A rate decrease filed by one company doesn't change what another one charges. Here's how to use the news:

Recent Texas homeowners rate filings lean toward decreases, but your premium is set by your company and your house. Shop your renewal, and ask what your roof's condition and type are worth in discounts.
